IELTS Writing Marking Scheme || How IELTS Writing is evaluated?

IELTS Writing (Task 1& Task 2) Marking Scheme

IELTS Writing Task 1 and Task 2 scores are calculated on the basis of 4 unique criteria:
  1. Task Achievement (TA) = how well, and to the point, a candidate answered the Essay/Graph Statement. TA is sometimes also referred to as TR (Task Response).

To boost the scores for TA in  IELTS Writing:

·         present the information accurately and to the point

·         answer all parts of the task

·         provide a clear overview of the statement

·         highlight key features and support detail with data (Academic task 1)

·         Present your position clearly, candidate must have a definite opinion (Task 2 and General task 1)

  1. Coherence and Cohesion (CC) = how well is your text is structured.

To increase the scores for CC in IELTS Writing:

    • manage paragraphing style
    • make sure that each paragraph has a central idea
    • use advanced linking words and cohesive devices (in contrastthusin my opinionto sum up, conditional sentences, etc.) [Avoid using common linkers such as firstly, Secondly, Moreover, furthermore, plethora etc.]
  1. Lexical Resource (LR) = how good is your vocabulary (efficacy of the use of collocation and phrasal verbs).

Note: Tough and lengthy and complex words do not only form a perfect vocabulary.

To increase scores for LR:

·         use a wide range of vocabulary (words and their correct combinations)

·         use less common lexical items; for e.g. (use “Perfect” in the place of “Good”; use “a large extent” in place of “very much”; use “proportion” in place of “percentage”.

·         avoid errors in spelling and word formation

 

  1. Grammatical Range and Accuracy (GRA) = how good is the grip of a candidate to use grammar, and appropriate punctuation marks.

To increase the score for GRA in  IELTS Writing:

    • use a wide range of grammatical structures and tenses.
    • manage punctuation
    • avoid errors in sentences
    • insert a range of sentences (simple sentences, compound sentences, complex sentences, Conditional sentences etc.

  •  IELTS Writing task 2 is evaluated for 6 Bands and the remaining 3 Bands are attributing to the evaluation of Task 1.

    For instance, if in task 2, a candidate is scoring 4 Band out of 6 Bands, and in Task 1, scoring  2 Bands out of 3 Bands. In the evaluation process of IELTS Writing the used formula is as follows:

    Total Obtained Bands in IELTS writing =  Obtained bands in Task 1 + Obtained bands in Task2
